HOUSTON – Game consoles are always popular holiday gifts. But this year more people are having them repaired, perhaps to avoid paying more for a new one in this period of high inflation.
And as we’ve learned, one of the things that can cause consoles to fail will blow your mind. They are cockroaches.
We stepped into a uBreakiFix store in Houston. Hands were engaged in game consoles, they did not play them, but repaired them.
“Many consoles for all different brands, can be PS4, PS5, PS3, XBOXes of new and old generations, Nintendo Switch,” said Enrique Gonzalez, owner of a uBreakiFix store.

Repair services report a 20 percent increase in the number of people bringing game consoles in for repair.
Why? Supply chain delays and inflation could make new units even harder to find and more expensive this year. Some people find it cheaper to buy a broken PS5 on eBay and have it repaired.
“A repair usually costs no more than $200, some are no more than $100, some are $20, some are $80,” said Gonzalez.
Common problems? Extra wear and tear while gamers sat at home during the pandemic. And problems with the HDMI port by transporting them with the cables still connected.
“People like to take their devices everywhere, so they’re kind of rough about unplugging the HDMI cable,” says Gonzalez.

Plus overheating from dust, and yes cockroaches can get in.
“They’re attracted to those compact spaces, and it’s very hot, so it’s an attractive place for them,” he explained.
But the internal power supply can fry the cockroaches in the components, causing the console to malfunction.
“We have to close it immediately because that’s when the bugs damaged the board,” Gonzalez said.
So, to prolong the life of your console, don’t overheat it, don’t leave it on the floor or in tight spaces, and keep it free of food that could attract pests.

“If they want to unplug something, make sure they unplug it gently. Turn off the console first,” Gonzalez added.
Cleaning them once a year will keep them working properly. You can score big savings by making your console last for years.
Cockroaches can also invade computers stored in tight spaces, so keep them in open areas.
