Parramatta Eels forward pass, Mitchell Moses pass, Will Penisini tries, Eels opens the score, North Queensland Cowboys, sin bin, try

The Eels have secured a spot in the grand final with a huge 24-20 win over the Cowboys in Townsville, but questions remain about their controversial opening attempt, which was scored on a pass. Fox League’s Andrew Voss had no doubts that he was moving forward.

Parramatta enforcer Isaiah Papali’i threw a wayward pass from the dummy half on the fifth tackle, just seven minutes into the game, in which Mitchell Moses pushed his way forward.

Moses, with his back turned to the defense, lobbed the ball across the field and found Papali’i in space to pass to young gun Will Penisini to score.

The Cowboys cover defense protested to the linesman for a forward pass, but umpire Grant Atkins waved the complaints away.

“I was convinced Parramatta’s pass was forward, but we can’t go back to check that, secure it,” said Voss.

“Mitchell Moses after Papali’i threw him a shocking pass, he twirled and swung around and the ball went forward,” said Fox League’s Greg Alexander.

“Well, they can’t help it, give it a try,” Voss said.

“The hands went forward, the hands went forward, the ball went forward,” said Alexander.

“There’s no question, but the Cowboys, you just have to put it behind you, don’t you,” Voss said.

“They have to come together, they’ve had them all and will now be behind the scoreboard,” said Fox League’s Shane Flanagan.

After reviewing the pass, Alexander changed his tune, believing there was a possibility that the pass was flat – meaning it was running perfectly horizontal.

“The more you look at that pass, even though it looks like it’s moving forward, it went straight over the line,” said Alexander.

“He threw it right in front of it, that angle gave us a different view than what we saw from above, it went right over the line.

“I stick to my first impression,” Voss said.

Later, Eels backrower Shaun Lane drafted a Maika Sivo pass and once again the pass was questioned.

Lane threw a pass with his bat to the line to find his winger to give his side the lead, and Voss was again skeptical.

“It’s a very similar pass to Mitchell Moses before,” Flanagan said.

“I know Feldt touched it, but gosh, I think it might have left Lane’s hand a little bit out, controversy,” Voss said.
